Battle of the air bandsMishawaka parks celebrate end of season By
LAUREEN FAGANTribune Staff Writer
The Battell Park bandshell was the stage for Air Jam 2005, the annual lip-sync contest
marking the end of Mishawaka Parks and Recreation Department's summer park programs. On stage are the "Sassy Sisters" of Camp
Tawanchi -- from left, Carlee Daniels, 11, of Niles; Elizabeth Laubner, 9, and Maxx Silber, 10, of Mishawaka; Kara Casey,
10, of South Bend; and Mackinzie Grannan, 9, of Mishawaka.

along to the "Saved By the Bell" television theme song during Friday's Air Jam 2005 in Battell Park. Paulinski works at Mary
Gibbard, while Blair worked this summer in Battell Park.

Air guitar aficionados had something to cheer about Friday during the Mishawaka Parks & Recreation Department's annual
end-of-season "Air Jam."
There was the After Hours Gang from Camp Tawanchi, doing "Lunch Lady Land."
There was William Walls, an 11-year-old Emmons student who backed up a girl group from Hillis Hans that included Latanya
Jenkins, 12.
There were bright yellow inflatable "air guitars" and hot pink plastic microphones.
And there were the directors of the five parks themselves, doing the theme song from the "Saved By the Bell" television
show, dancing around desks lined up on the Battell stage.
"It basically just signifies the end of the park program," said Carmen Maes, director of recreation for Mishawaka.
The talent show was held in the Battell Park bandshell before a crowd of proud parents and grandparents.
"All the parks got together, and this is a lip-synching contest, basically," Maes said.
Kids from Battell, Hillis Hans, Rose, Mary Gibbard and Merrifield parks came to show off and be silly.
But they also talked about their camp experiences.
"We went swimming and everything," William said.
"We did activities, we did crafts. I think it's a great experience. We have a whole group," he added, waiting to lip-sync
Ciara's "One, Two Step" with the SLIM girls.
Dayton Torma, 2, danced on a picnic table as his 6-year-old sister, Briana Howe, a LaSalle Elementary student, danced up
on stage.
"They loved it," said Judy Lamon, grandmother of the dynamic duo.
"This has been the best, the whole parks program -- having a place where they could go and be safe," she said.
Elaine Veevaete, executive director of Camp Fire USA River Bend Council, had dozens of kids from her Camp Tawanchi program
at Air Jam 2005.
"We have some really cute acts, I think," Veevaete said.
"There's one, the 'Monster Mash,' that's just adorable."
Sure enough, first- and second-graders dressed in Halloween outfits danced and sang to the Bobby "Boris" Picket classic.
A group from Battell Park's program called itself The Roses and chose a song taught at Oak Creek Community Church's vacation
Bible school, "He's the King of Everything."
The group included 10-year-old Hannah Garton of Mishawaka, a fourth-grader at Battell Elementary in the fall who knew the
hand signs to go with the praise music.
Mandy Munro of Mishawaka had two children -- 6-year-old Harmony and 4-year-old Sage -- who spent the summer in the Mary
Gibbard program, she said.
"They're doing 'God Bless the U.S.A.,' " Munro said.
As for Harmony, she said she was excited.
"I've never been on the stage before," Harmony said.
But she did fine -- and when it was all over, Maes said she couldn't choose a winner.
All children were getting little red backpacks with drawstrings. But Maes had planned to give certificates to those who
came in first, second and third places.
"We just decided to inform everybody that they're all winners this year," Maes said.
"They've all worked so hard and it was so close," she said. "I hate to start segregating out first, second and third.
"They're all winners."

39 Munroe
Always standing proud on the corner
anxiously awaiting our Arrival
Old window panes waving, in the dusk,
as we rounded the bend
Bob in his chair, legs crossed, paper
in hand
Nanny at the kitchen sink, peering
out the window
Or the old fashioned key was always
there above the porch
Letting everyone in, before the screen
door would slam
Generations of us
Burst through the door with excitement
Visiting Nanny and Bob
The last day of school
Or getting asked to prom
Anticipation of fresh chocolate chip
cookies baked bread
Lumbered through the door
Angry with mother, daughter, father,
son, brother, sister, husband, wife, cousin
Dates at the front and the back
Not to mention the dogs, all of the
dogs
Returning from weddings, births,
funerals and
Births again
Love swirled always
With dashes of disappointment
Hints of jealousy
Anger and anxiety
Misunderstanding
Glorious Joy
Life
But always swirling with Love
I envision in the house, at quiet
times
Wisps of our selves past
Flutter
Up the front stairs and down the
back
For diapers and midnight feedings
For shoes and slippers to go and
to stay
For sweatshirts and footballs and
hats and hand knit mittens
Laughing out loud
Veils and cameras and Easter hats
To chase and to get away
Early to bed and early to rise….
For hot chocolate in the early morn,
the sky pink outside
Last potty trips and walk-throughs
before the long ride home
Time has come and gone
The house has stayed the same
Full of memories and difficulties
and sweetness and Life
It has always been there
But Time has come and gone
39 Munroe and all that it stands
for in our hearts and tears and joy
will always be there
will always be the same
Just thought that I would let you both know that Alex's team won their game yesterday 1-0. Reportedly they played
harder than they did all last year, but I still saw a lot of room for improvement. Alex had a great game. She
hurt her hamstring a bit in the basketball game on Saturday, and I thought she might have to sit out, but seemed to be mostly
okay yesterday.

Hi All,
This is just a quickie,
but I felt like I should get something on the new website.
We have been busy busy
busy (just like everyone else I am sure). The kids did get some exciting news
this winter. They both made the Jr. Irish Soccer teams! Since they are on travel teams, they will be going a little further for games. Alex is in an Indianapolis League so we will go all over Indiana for her.
Christopher is in a Northern Indiana League, so we won’t have to go as far.
I am assisting Alex’s coach and am thrilled to be able to do so. For
a while I was going to practices and training sessions and just watching, and I felt like a kid at the playground waiting
for an invitation to play.
Although we have tried to avoid
playing two sports at once, right now they are also playing Basketball, so we spend a lot of time going to practices and games
at this point! But we are having lots of fun.
This past winter we only went
sledding a few times, but we also did some ice skating, and that was fun. Of
course there is school and homework, and Christopher’s Birthday and Easter coming.
Now I have to get my house cleaned up so that it is presentable for the birthday party (it has been quite neglected
as of late, but fun and games and sure are more fun and more important than cleaning.
If you are looking for a good
movie to see with your kids, see Because of Winn Dixie, it is excellent, for all
ages.
Happy Easter to everyone! Love, Bobbie, Rick, Alex and Christopher

Happy New Year to Everyone!
It has been a long time since I have written a
contribution for the family newsletter. The fall I think. I meant to write something right after being in Northampton for Nanny’s funeral. It was really nice to see everyone who was there, and I missed seeing you Meaghan and Katie. I was thinking on the way home from Northampton,
that Nanny must have had a really big reunion when she got to heaven, with her mom and dad and several brothers and sisters
and in laws. I could hear Nanny laughing when she got together with all of them. We were lucky to have such a wonderful Nanny and to have many good memories of her. It was ironic how she had us all thinking that secretly we were her favorites!
We hope that everyone had wonderful holidays,
both Thanksgiving and Christmas. We ended up celebrating both holidays two days
each. We had a full family Thanksgiving Dinner with almost the whole family at
Rick’s sister Patti’s house, we ate, watched football, went sledding
down the backyard, played pool, the piano and visited, and then ate pie after all that.
Then the next day we did it all again at our house with Angie, Paula and Amanda and their families. Again we again watched football, played pool (on our miniature pool table), went sledding (down the basement
stairs), played the piano, and then ate pie.
On December 18th Paula and Charlie
got married. The wedding was planned quickly, and was absolutely beautiful. Paula and Charlie were both beautiful and handsome, and Lexie and Nate were adorable
as well. Angie and Alex walked up and lit the candles at the beginning of the
ceremony, and Rick walked Paula down the aisle.
Amanda was the official witness signing off on the official certificate of marriage for Paula. After the wedding we all went out for dinner. Paula and Charlie
are planning to have a reception some time during the spring or the summer of 2005.
Christmas was very nice as well. Amanda, Paula and Angie came for Christmas Eve to our house and we had a standing rib roast, potatoes,
green bean casserole and some other side dishes. Then we exchanged presents. Everyone had been generous and thoughtful. Then
we (Rick, Bobbie, Alex and Christopher)
went to Christmas Eve mass. Alex was in the children’s choir, and played
the piano during communion. Mass was very nice (but noisy, as it was the 4:30
children’s mass). Fr. Andre is always quick to point out that a quiet children’s
mass is a bad sign.
We had a nice Christmas morning with Alex and
Christopher opening their various presents. They were pleased and grateful for
snow boards (yet unused due to the weather), personal cd players, and a playstation 2.
It was easy to shop for Rick this year because all of his requests were
available at Harbor Freight, his favorite tool store. I got some much needed
new walking sneakers, slippers (which I accidentally wore to the movies yesterday!) a robe and some new shorts. Then we went for a quiet Christmas visit at Grandma and Grandpa Woolley’s house, where we again ate
to our hearts’ content. She had ham, potatoes, dumplings, beans, bean dip
(Alex’s favorite) and FUDGE!!! I personally ate enough FUDGE for the whole
family, because it was so good!! And then I had some peanut butter FUDGE on top
of it.
The day after Christmas we went to Virginia to celebrate with my mom and dad and brothers and their families. We finally got to meet our new niece, Emma, and she is adorable. She was very nice and let all of us take turns holding her, especially Alex. Parenthood suits Patrick and Jessi quite well, and they seem
to take it all in stride!! Christopher really enjoys having a younger cousin
to play with and Jackson seems to enjoy his company. Lily
was feeling a bit under the weather, but was as cute as a button as usual. We had a really nice visit in Reston, again eating
more holiday food, taking in “A Series of Unfortunate Events” and the new Air and Space Museum.
Then we came home to have a few days at home before we went back to work. Tomorrow
is Monday, back to reality.
Peace and Happy New Year to you all. I sent out my Christmas cards as we were pulling out of Reston this year,
(after Christmas), and hopefully they reached everyone. However, Brian and Bridget,
I don’t have your new address…..Take care of all those new babies out there!
Congratulations to all of you mothers and fathers who just had, and will be shortly having babies (especially you,
Meaghan and Scot!). See everyone in September I hope for the last wedding!!
God Bless!
Love,
Bobbie,
Rick, Alex and Christopher
